A city protected
by gold standard
policing.
The Covington Police Department has achieved what fewer than 1% of law enforcement agencies worldwide attain. CALEA accreditation is not a certificate — it is continuous, independent verification that every policy, procedure, and officer meets the most rigorous international standards.
We were the first in Georgia — and 10th in the world. We carry that distinction with pride and an unrelenting commitment to improvement.
Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies — the gold standard in public safety, independently verified every three years.
Six divisions.
One mission.
About the CPD
Excellence is not a goal. It is a minimum standard.
Our Mission
The Covington Police Department is committed to protecting the lives and property of the citizens of Covington through proactive, community-oriented law enforcement delivered at the highest professional standards.
CALEA accreditation — the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies — is recognized globally as the pinnacle of public safety standards. We were the first in Georgia to achieve it, and maintain it continuously through rigorous ongoing review every three years.
Independent assessors verify that every policy, every procedure, and every officer meets or exceeds the most rigorous international standards in law enforcement.

Six Divisions.
One Department.
Each division a specialist force. Together, a unified mission.
Patrol Division
The backbone of the department. Patrol officers work assigned geographic sectors, providing 24/7 rapid emergency response, proactive crime prevention, and sustained community presence throughout Covington.
Criminal Investigations
Detectives investigate major crimes including felonies, property crimes, and special victims cases. CID works closely with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation and federal agencies on complex cases requiring specialized resources.
Community Policing
Officers dedicated to building sustained, meaningful relationships with residents and businesses. Coordinates neighborhood watch, school resource officers, and outreach programs that build long-term trust between law enforcement and the community.
K-9 Unit
Handler-dog teams trained in narcotics detection, suspect tracking, building searches, and crowd control support. Our K-9 teams provide capabilities unavailable in standard patrol deployments.
Traffic Division
Traffic enforcement, accident investigation, DUI enforcement, and school zone safety. Includes motorcycle officers and a commercial vehicle inspection program covering major corridors through Covington.
Records Division
Public records request processing, evidence management, departmental records maintenance, and court liaison services. The administrative foundation that keeps every division running effectively.
Building trust
through partnership.
Six community programs. One goal: genuine connection.
Citizens Police Academy
A 10-week program offering residents an inside look at police operations, use-of-force training, dispatch, and department functions. Graduates become our strongest community advocates. Applications accepted twice yearly.
Neighborhood Crime Watch
Organized watch groups coordinated directly with patrol officers. Residents receive training, communication tools, and direct access to their sector officer for reporting suspicious activity.
Youth Mentorship
Mentorship, summer internships, and positive engagement connecting young people with officers outside enforcement contexts — building trust and relationships that last beyond a single interaction.
Child Safety Seat Program
Free child safety seat inspections by NHTSA-certified technicians. Appointments available at CPD headquarters. Seats provided at no cost for eligible families.
Senior Safe Initiative
Home security assessments, scam and fraud awareness education, and voluntary wellness checks for Covington's senior residents. Keeping our most vulnerable community members safe.
Shop with a Cop
An annual tradition pairing officers with children from families in need for a holiday shopping experience — building community bonds one shopping cart at a time.
